A great late winter/early spring bloomer is
Loropetalum. The colorful one we have at the arboretum is more a large shrub although new varieties that are shorter, have purple leaves, or even white flowers can be found. When planted in well-drained soil, this plant has been found to have very few problems from insects and diseases. The arriving hummingbirds appreciate the early blooms.
