EFFICIENT WATERING

Drip Irrigation in Vegetable Garden
Sunny, hot, and no rain.  We have been experiencing a weather pattern that is not ideal for anything newly planted.  At the Arboretum, once a plant is established it is left to grow on its own.  However, the containers, vegetable garden, herb garden, and all new plants have to be watered.  We use drip irrigation and watering cans filled from our rain barrels, cisterns, and spigots.  For the home gardener, you may find some useful watering information in the article:

THANK YOU FELLOW GARDENERS

We had a record turnout for yesterday's plant sale.  The day was sunny and hot.  The plants were carefully surveyed by the crowd and promptly scooped up!  Thank you all for your support.  If you need some more assistance when planting, call our Info Line at 252-902-1705 Monday or Thursday 10:00 AM-Noon (at other times leave a message and someone will return you call when they are in the office).

PLANT SALE - NEXT SATURDAY

We are one week away from our Plant Sale (May 18th).  We have close to 4,000 plants available.  You will find great prices, some passalong plants you no longer find on the market, a huge selection of herbs, a bunch of natives, and plants you didn't even know you needed until you saw them! 

The gate opens at 9:00 AM for Friends of the Arboretum.  Bring your card if you already are a Friend.  If you aren't, come a little earlier to join.  The cost for one year membership starts at $20 for seniors, $25 for individuals, $40 family.

Everyone else can start shopping at 10:00 AM.  Also, at 11:00 AM is a Plant Swap.  Bring a plant, garden tools, garden containers, garden art, etc. and you can swap with your fellow gardeners.  A few Master Gardeners will be on hand to organize the swap.

The sale wraps up at noon!  Hope to see you there (rain or shine)!

HERBS FOR SALE

We are less than 2 weeks away from our Plant Sale.  Our list of plants available has grown to over 3,500.  One group of plants we will have is HERBS.  You will find some common ones (e.g., sage, oregano, basil and catmint) and some not so easy to find (e.g., Citronella balm and Spanish lavender).  Additionally, Master Gardener Volunteers knowledgeable about herb growing and use will be ready to answer your questions.
