Sedum acre - Goldmoss Stonecrop

Sedum acre
Our Fire Hydrant Garden is glowing with a carpet of yellow flowers of Sedum acre.  One can see why this is commonly called Goldmoss.  This plant is a vigorous groundcover that tolerates hot, dry conditions and poor soil.  After showing its star-shaped masses of flowers in May/June it remains an evergreen plant for the rest of the year.  It is easily propagated by breaking off a piece and sticking it in the ground!  The key to success with Sedum is well-drained soil.

NATIVE PLANTS at PLANT SALE

Itea virginica - Sweetspire
You will find a nice variety of native plants at next Saturday's PITT COUNTY ARBORETUM PLANT SALE.

Why plant native plants?
Beauty
Many native plants produce showy flowers, abundant fruits and seeds, and brilliant fall foliage. By planting native plants, you will have a beautiful yard that is friendly to wildlife.
Low Maintenance
Native plants generally grow well and require little care when grown on proper soils under the right environmental conditions. By choosing the right native plants, you may be able to use fewer pesticides and less water.

COUNTDOWN TO PITT COUNTY ARBORETUM PLANT SALE

Prior Year Plant Sale

The Master Gardeners are putting the finishing touches on all aspects of the upcoming plant sale on Saturday, May 17th.  You will be able to buy sun and shade perennials, trees, shrubs, roses, vines, ground covers, herbs, vegetables, and annuals with prices starting at $1. Over 3,500 plants will be available.  The sale is held rain or shine.  (Rain certainly doesn't stop a gardener!)  Cash or checks only.

Additionally, there is a bottle tree raffle.  Hats and garden gloves will also be for sale.

Don't forget the Plant/Garden Art/Tools/Containers/Etc. SWAP.  At this event you bring a garden item you want to exchange for some treasure from another's garden.  A separate area is set up for this and is managed by the Master Gardeners.  If you are bringing a plant, be sure to have it labelled as to what it is and what type of care it needs.  Any items not swapped will need to go back home with the original owner.
